Kidney Stone : causes, symptoms and treatment

   Introduction to Kidney Stones:

       kidney stones also known as renal calculi or nephrolithiasis.

       Kidney stones are small hard deposits of minerals and acid salts in the kidney. 

       Stones grown in size and cause blockage of ureter. 

       This is more common in male as compared to female. 

     ●MAIN CAUSE OF FORMATION OF KIDNEY STONE INCLUDES:

       Intake of too much salt or sugar .

       Drinking less water .

       Highly concentrated urine. 

       Obesity. 

       Underlying medical illness. 

       Family history.

       Although several factors may increase risk of kidney stones.  

   Introduction as per Ayurveda:

       According to Ayurveda, it is known as Ashmari.
       It occurs due to imbalance in tridoshas (VATA,PITTA and KAPHA).
       Ayurvedic treatment aims to rebalance tridoshas and prevent formation of renal stone. 

   Types of Kidney Stones:

        Four types of kidney stones 

                  (1)calcium, 

                  (2)uric acid, 

                  (3)struvite, 

                  (4)cystine.

    Symptoms:

          Common symptoms of kidney stones are 

            ▪︎ Severe pain in lower back side.

            ▪︎ Presence of blood in urine (Hematuria).

            ▪︎ Burning sensation during urination. 

            ▪︎ May be vomiting. 

            ▪︎ Stomach pain. 

            ▪︎ May be fever or chills.

    Diagnosis:

            ▪︎ CBC

            ▪︎ Abdominal-USG

            ▪︎ URINE ANALYSIS

            ▪︎ X-ray 

            ▪︎ CT-SCAN

    Prevention:

            ▪︎ Drinks plenty of water. 

            ▪︎ Reduce salt or sugar intake. 

            ▪︎ Don't hold urine for long duration. 

            ▪︎ Maintain optimun Calcium level. 

            ▪︎ Maintain optimum body weight. 

            ▪︎ Lifestyle modifications.

            ▪︎ Treat underlying medical illness. 

     Treatment:

          ●MODERN TREATMENT AND SURGICAL PROCEDURES:

           (1) HYDRATION 
           (2) PAIN MANAGEMENT- NSAIDS 
           (3) ALPHA-BLOCKER 
           (4) ANTIBIOTICS 
           (5) DIURETICS 
           (6) LASER STONE SURGERY 
           (7) SHOCKWAVE LITHOTRIPSY 
           (8) URETEROSCOPY
           (9) PERCUTANEOUS NEPHROLITHOTOMY 
         

          ●AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT:

           (1) HERBAL MEDICATION- PASHANBHEDADI KWATH, GOKSHURU CHURNA, VARUNADI KWATH, CHANANASAVA, CHANDRAPRABHA VATI ETC.

           (2) LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS- YOGA, MEDITATION AND ADEQUATE SLEEP. 

           (3) DIET MODIFICATIONS:

               •AVOID- SPINACH, CASHEW, BEETS, PROCESSED FOODS, SALTY FOODS, RED MEET, POULTRY. 

               •CONSUME- GREEN TEA, COFFEE, FRUIT JUICE, BANANA, PAPAYA, DAIRY PRODUCTS.

    Complications:

        - Stone may get stuck in urinary tract.
        - Increase risk of urinary tract infection (UTIs).
        - Hematuria: blood in urine

        - Recurrent stone formation can contribute to developing chronic kidney disease (CKD)
